As I was creating a score* book for the Day de Dada Art Nurse performances in Boston, I started thinking about visual art health care scores and creating them using the chance haiku technique I had employed to make collage in the past.
My process is to go through magazines and books and collect phrases that are 5 and 7 syllables long, then arranged them in the 5-7-5 format of haiku poetry. When I have an arrangement that I like I add an image to use as background. As often is the case I am amazed at the interesting ideas that occur with the connecting of the phrases.
Phylis Forman asked me for artwork to include in her exhibit that was part of the Staten Island Divine Women events. Their goal is to foster “female empowerment through art, music, dance, spoken word, and comedic performance.” So the new collages went on the wall at Art On the Terrace Gallery (May 19-27, 2018).
Then I ran into Randee Silv and she told me to send some work to her for her new publication “swifts & slows: a quarterly of crisscrossings” and so I sent her some of the collages.
And Jane Wang of The Mobius Artists Group is creating a “Dadabloge”, a contemporary online version of the “Dadaglobe” which was intended as an anthology of the Dada movement in 1920 edited by Tristan Tzara. So some of these will also become part of her project.
And I am sure they will be popping up in other places too…
